Jordan-Hare Stadium
North Endzone Videoboard

For this initial phase of a larger north endzone expansion, TTL provided geotechnical exploration, construction materials engineering and testing, and Special Inspection services for a $25.7 million project to upgrade Jordan-Hare Stadium with a new videoboard structure and other amenities.

This project involved the removal of a former scoreboard and installation of an approximately 154-foot x 46-foot videoboard, supported by a seven-level concrete and steel structure reaching approximately 179 feet in height. In addition to the new videoboard, the concrete frame structure provides future spaces for a concourse level, event levels, a club level, a suite level and an upper terrace level.

The structure was placed atop eight drilled shaft foundations designed to bear in rock, with shaft diameters ranging from 36 to 54 inches and depths varying from 30 to 42 feet.

During construction, TTL provided full-time inspection services for drilled shaft foundations and concrete testing. Our team also monitored structural steel installation, verified welded and bolted connections, and verified proper application of protective coatings.

CHALLENGE

One of the key challenges was the highly variable depth of bedrock, as previous soil borings indicated rock depths ranging from 17 to 35 feet. Additionally, the project required precise coordination to avoid conflicts with existing underground utilities and drainage structures.

SOLUTION

To mitigate depth variations of the bedrock, TTL performed supplemental geotechnical borings to better define subsurface conditions and refine foundation design recommendations. TTL also marked boring locations in collaboration with Auburn University Facilities and adjusted placements, as needed, to prevent disruptions to the existing underground utilities and drainage structures.

By implementing rigorous testing and inspection protocols in accordance with Chapter 17 of the International Building Code (IBC), TTL helped maintain structural integrity and compliance with project drawings and specifications, contributing to the so-far successful completion of this high-profile stadium upgrade.
